But we review some of the best books of 2011, look at some hot new ones coming out soon, and wrap-up our final thoughts on Elantris. And if the next novels will be as good as this one then Brandon Sanderson is up for a great career. Elantris cannot be said to be a part of this "Tolkienesque" tradition. "Elantris" is the debut novel of Brandon Sanderson and it is a good debut. Luckily, I found one of Sanderson's free-standing fantasy novels in the sale when Borders closed down (yes, I remember where and when I bought every book in my bookshelf), the one called Elantris. It's not that it's a bad book, it's just that I wasn't all that interested in the storyline or characters. Elantris: Part II begins with Raoden continuing to try to make Elantris into a better place by giving the inhabitants work to do instead of wasting their time thinking about their never ending hunger and physical pains. Most Fantasy can be defined by its setting and plot: in a medieval world of magic, an unlikely hero saves the world from an unspeakable evil. I think she may have suffered from the sheod and just doesn't want to admit it. I found myself cluing in to what was about to happen a number of times just before the events or epiphanies transpired. Elantris: gigantic, beautiful, literally radiant, filled with benevolent beings who used their powerful magical abilities to benefit all the people of Arelon. Sanderson is one of the new generation of fantasy novelists who may have read Tolkien, but feels no obligation to duplicate his work. Elantris is the first novel by acclaimed fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson I've read that I didn't find to be a page turner.
